The Cooperstown Community
and the "Main Street" Way of Life
(Click any image for a

Residents of the
Cooperstown area love their community, its scenic surroundings, its rural traditions and,
most especially, its "Main Street" way of life. They are proud of the many
historic buildings in and around the Village. They value the absence of urban
sprawl, traffic congestion, indiscriminate signage, and other indications of unplanned
development.
Residents appreciate the human scale of the
community where merchants and customers can develop strong loyalties and
relationships. Residents also wish to maintain retail diversity in the shopping
district, so that both residential and tourism demands can be met.
There are no large shopping malls in the
immediate vicinity, and there is a strong community preference that none be built.
As the county seat and the locus of the region's
largest employer, Bassett Healthcare, we offer a base of year round buyers who prefer to
shop and spend locally as much as possible. We are also a magnet for
tourist/shoppers from large urban centers near and far seeking specific speciality
offerings. These retail advantages are complemented in a unique way by a large
seasonal influx of tourist/shoppers seeking the random purchase.
For the self-employed, or those operating small
businesses, we also offer exceptionally favorable living and working conditions.
In short, we believe our "Main Street"
approach offers the qualities on which long-term economic, social and environmental
sustainability depend. We have prepared these pages to introduce our community and
the attributes we cherish to those businesses and individuals who might be considering
relocating here.
