In the 1920's, Edward Severin Clark, a local philanthropist, built a hospital at the request of one of Central New York's most devoted physicians, Dr. Mary Imogene Bassett. Today, Bassett is the region's largest employers with more than 2,200 employees. Bassett Healthcare is a comprehensive network of physicians, providers, hospitals, and community health centers in eight counties, working as a close team to improve patient care and community health. Nearly 190 salaried physicians are part of the Bassett Physician Group, a group practice of professionals engaged in patient care, teaching, and research. Bassett is well known as a rural teaching hospital, regional referral center, area trauma center, cancer treatment center, and primary care network. Bassett will be providing cardiac surgery as a component of their Bassett Heart Care Initiative in 2003. In 2001, there were 8,145 admissions to Bassett hospital, the foundation of the network in Cooperstown. There were also 460,111 outpatient visits to the Bassett Physician Group with offices in Cooperstown and 20 regional locations. In addition, there were 359 admissions to O'Connor Hospital in Delhi and 667 admissions to Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill, hospitals that are also part of the Bassett Network. Bassett Healthcare has an operating budget in excess of $172 million, 62-percent of which is devoted to wages and benefits. A substantial portion of the wages and salaries are spent locally. Besides the salary and wages generated by Bassett, people
visiting the hospital and their families comprise a significant shopping
audience. Bassett Healthcare is only a short three-block walk from Main
Street. The hospital attracts significant numbers of long-term outpatients
and their caregivers who find the business-shopping district convenient
and attractive. Visit the Bassett Healthcare
