Norwich's Northeast Classic Car Museum to Expand
The Northeast Classic Car Museum (NECCM), a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization, announced its plans to grow by nearly 50% by Spring 2009. Expansion was made possible when, approximately two years ago, the Museum acquired a facility of nearly 30,000 square feet that adjoins the existing Museum. According to Sewain Conklin, President of the Board of Trustees, "The Museum has put a new roof on the facility and has made some improvements to common areas since acquiring the property." Over the past year, Museum Trustees evaluated Museum expansion and have recently concluded that expansion was feasible and would further elevate NECCM as a significant automotive museum and tourist attraction.
This is the second major expansion in the Museum's 11 years of existence. The Museum will conduct a Capital and Endowment Campaign effort to fund the expansion/renovation and provide for the Museum's future. More than half of the $1.1 million has been committed by Mr. George Staley and by a donation from NBT Bank. Martin A. Dietrich, CEO of NBT Bank, stated that “The Northeast Classic Car Museum is one of the area's great success stories and NBT is pleased to be an early contributor as the Museum takes another step forward in its phenomenal growth.”
Currently, renovations are underway at the facility. The building being renovated is at least 70 years old. It once housed Bennett-Ireland, a manufacturer of fire place equipment. The Museum plans to take advantage of the building's clerestory windows and elevated center space to complement exhibits. No decisions have been made about exhibits that will occupy the space but the Exhibit Committee will begin to evaluate possibilities in the near future.
At the conclusion of the project, the building will be completely renovated to include new exterior wall covering to be consistent with the rest of the Museum's buildings, new windows, insulation, electrical, and HVAC.
Currently the Museum has on exhibit approximately 120 automobiles and is open 9a.m.-5p.m. daily, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

Popular Wassailing Weekends continue at the Fly Creek Cider Mill
Steeped in tradition and legend, wassail dates from the 1300’s when sharing a pot of holiday wassail was a community event. The word evolved from the Old English “waes hael” meaning good health. It was the custom to drink and shout again “Waes Hael!” before passing the bowl on to the next eager participant. Wassailing became a tradition as carolers carried bowls of hot wassail for good health, refilling them from neighbor’s own simmering pots of wassail.
It is this celebration of friends and holiday spirit that prompts the Fly Creek Cider Mill to feature wassail and its preparation. “Wassail is a great use of our award-winning cider for experiencing the traditions of the past during the hectic holiday season,” states Mill co-owner Brenda Michaels. Mill visitors learn how to prepare wassail several different ways with a variety of different pre-mixed spice blends. Available too, are wassail gift mixes, a good way to spread holiday cheer with friends and family.
Cider will be available every day from 9:00 – 6:00 until the Mill closes for the season December 21st. The Mill will re-open for its 153rd season on April 3rd, 2008.
For a complete list of holiday events and money-saving coupons visit the Mill’s website at www.flycreekcidermill.com.
Our favorite Holiday Wassail recipe:
Holiday Wassail/Hot Mulled Fly Creek Cider
1/2 cup brown sugar dash or two of nutmeg
1 tsp. Whole Cloves* 3 inch cinnamon stick*
1 tsp. Whole Allspice* 1/2 Gallon FLY CREEK CIDER
Combine Fly Creek Cider Mill CIDER and all ingredients in a large saucepan or crock pot. Slowly bring to a boil. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Remove spices. Drop orange and apple slices on top. Simple, easy and delicious! Serves 8 people.
*available as a pre-prepared mix in bulk or teabag form from the Mill or its on-line store at www.flycreekcidermill.com.

Gift Basketing Workshop at Fly Creek Cider Mill, December 6 & 7
The Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard will hold its fifth annual Gift Basketing Workshop Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 until 2:00. Mill Gift Basket experts will be on hand to provide their skills in creating a memorable gift. Workshop participants–Basketeers--are encouraged to bring their own basket or box to the Mill and then select items from the Mill’s wide array of Pride of New York specialty foods. Basketeers may also bring along items from other local sources so as to personalize a regional basket that will remind someone of home. “We invite visitors to be creative in their basket ideas. Regional products from our local breweries or a special item from one of our museum shops plus some flavorful Fly Creek Cider Mill products will produce a gift that says a lot about all the flavors of the Cooperstown area,” says Bill Michaels, co-owner of the Mill.
During the workshop Basketeers can sample hot holiday wassail plus learn how to make it at home with delicious Fly Creek Cider Mill Cider. Wassailing Weekends continue through December 14th when the Mill closes for the season. The workshop cost is limited to only the items purchased and registration is not required.
If you can not attend, don´t despair, you may create a custom basket on the Mill´s On-Line store. Simply click here and shop on-line! After filling your cart with your basket items, click the "create-your-own basket" option from the Gift Baskets category and the Mill´s gift basket experts will create a basket to remember.

SAFE KIDS OF OTSEGO COUNTY OFFERS TOY SAFETY REMINDERS
RECALLS MAKE TOY SHOPPING MORE STRESSFUL;
Most Deaths Caused by Choking
With more than 65 percent of the toys bought in the United States between the Friday after Thanksgiving and Christmas, parents and caregivers are heading into the country’s busiest toy-buying season. Rich McCaffery, a Community Educator with Bassett Healthcare Safe Kids Program, offers the following to alert parents and other prurchasing toys for kids.
But with millions of toys being recalled because of dangerous lead paint and magnets, toy shoppers need to remember that that number is a small fraction of the overall number of toys -- approximately 3 billion -- sold in the United States every year. "Shoppers need to be even more informed than usual to make sure they buy safe, age-appropriate toys, said Rich McCaffery. "Even though most toys in the U.S. today are considered to be safe, it doesn’t mean we should throw caution to the wind." Email alerts keep shoppers up-to-date on recalls
Each year, approximately 217,000 toy-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency rooms nationwide. But on average, only 15 children under the age of 14, dies from a toy-related injury.
To stay informed, McCaffery recommends that parents sign up for emails that will keep them up-to-date on recalls. "It’s too difficult to get your information piecemeal from TV or the newspaper," said McCaffery "so if you get the emails sent to you each time a recall happens, you’ll be up-to-the-minute and won’t have to worry."
To sign up for recall emails, go to www.cpsc.gov and click on Sign up for Email Announcements.
Parents and caregivers shouldn’t hesitate to report defects or design features that seem dangerous. "If your child has a close call, the next child might not be so lucky," says McCaffery. "Report safety concerns about toys to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at 800-638-2772 or www.cpsc.gov. Your experience could be part of a pattern that might lead to a recall."
McCaffery also reminds parents that most toys are safe, especially if you buy from a reputable retailer. "That doesn’t mean you have to go to a ‘big box’ store, but if you shop a locally-owned toy store, make sure that the owner is aware and vigilant about getting recalled items off the shelves. And avoid used toys, which could have been recalled and not removed from circulation."
"If you buy toys secondhand or get hand-me-downs, visit www.cpsc.gov to make sure the toy hasn’t been recalled for safety reasons," says McCaffery. "If a new toy comes with a product registration card, mail it in right away so the manufacturer can contact you if the item is ever recalled."
Safe Kids of Otsego County also recommends these precautions to make sure to buy age-appropriate toys. All toys are clearly marked if they have small parts; do not buy toys with small parts (or allow a child under age 3 to play with those kinds of toys belonging to an older sibling); identify dangerous small parts. To be sure of a toy’s size, use a small parts tester. Do not let small children play with anything that can fit into one of these cylinders; inspect toys to make sure they are in good repair. Do not let young children play with toys that have straps, cords or strings longer than 7 inches, due to the risk of strangulation; actively supervise children. Caregivers should actively supervise children playing with any toy that has small parts, moving parts, electrical or battery power, cords, wheels or any other potentially risky component. Simply being in the same room as your child is not necessarily supervising. Active supervision means keeping the child in sight and in reach and paying undivided attention; practice proper storage. Teach children to put toys away after playing, to help prevent falls and unsupervised play, and make sure toys intended for younger children are stored separately from those for older children. Toy chests should be equipped or retrofitted with safety hinges that prevent the lid from closing on a child who is leaning over the open chest; if a chest does not have safety hinges, remove the lid.
